Philadelphia Center City: The City of Brotherly Labels
Philadelphia, your citizens get completely degraded by the hit TV show that has hit American televisions everywhere, and your pronunciations and accents drive the rest of the country crazy. But we know you have seen it all and can stand up to anything, including this latest map. By the way, you want that “one wiz wit?”
Prints, Mugs, Canvas Totes, and T-Shirts available in our Map Store.
SO, URBANE…HOW EXACTLY DID YOU CREATE THIS MAP? AREN’T YOU GUYS FROM CALIFORNIA OR SOMETHING? YOU DON’T KNOW MY CITY, GO AWAY!
An excellent question, web citizen. Even though we don’t have an office in each city where we create a new map, we do have local citizens who give us very informative and knowledgeable insights about their city. Our maps have been based out of some of these e-mails, for example (they do not reveal names for privacy purposes):
E-MAIL SAMPLE 1 (LOCAL RESIDENT)
E-MAIL SAMPLE 2 (PENN GRADUATE STUDENT)
Of course, no Urbane map is complete without some of the team members ACTUALLY visiting the city firsthand to explore…here’s the CEO jumping up and down at the “Rocky steps.”
…here’s another photo of us enjoying some delicious grub at the Reading Terminal Market.
We also love to soak ourselves in academic commentary of the city…here is a professor from Urban & Regional Studies Department at Cornell University giving a lecture on the initial urban design of historic Center City (which was partially the inspiration for the map design that we created in this edition – this mural is located along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, if we recall correctly)
BACK AT URBANE HQ…we formulate initial designs for the map and incorporate contributor suggestions into a rough outline. It’s always a tough call between information and geographical accuracy, as you can see…we also had a lot of Clif Bars and orange juice that day.
…and there you have it! AN URBANE PHILADELPHIA MAP IS BORN.
We seriously mean it when we say that our community contributors are some of the most important assets we have. Please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any suggestions about where we should map next (this can be for all communities big and small!). We welcome your constructive comments!
